The Role of an OBGYN in Your Pregnancy

For many women, one of the first items on their to-do list after discovering they are pregnant is to find an obstetrician, or OBGYN, to handle their pregnancy care. A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, and women want to know that their lives and the developing life within them are in good hands. Finding an OBGYN that understands their specific needs and wants is of utmost importance. Having an OBGYN that is on the same page as you when it comes to your pregnancy care can give you tremendous peace of mind during your pregnancy.

Your OBGYN will oversee your pregnancy throughout its duration. They will assess your health and the health of the baby in utero to determine the best possible pregnancy care. At your appointments, your OBGYN will check your general health, measure your belly, listen for the fetal heart rate, and occasionally do ultrasounds to measure the size of the baby. In the first two trimesters of your pregnancy, your OBGYN will only need to see you periodically. As your pregnancy progresses into its later months, your OBGYN visits will become more frequent. In a high risk pregnancy, OBGYN visits happen even more often.

When the time comes for you to deliver your baby, your OBGYN will be there for you every step of the way. They will see you through your time of labor, the delivery, and postpartum care. During your pregnancy, you will discuss with your OBGYN how you wish to deliver your baby, what kind of pain management you would like, and who you want in the delivery room with you. When you are in labor, your OBGYN will serve as your guide through the delivery process, while also monitoring you and your baby for any complications that may arise. Once your baby is born, your OBGYN will oversee your postpartum care immediately in the hospital after the birth, and for typically six weeks afterwards.

Your OBGYN will be with you throughout your pregnancy, so having an OBGYN that you trust is important. You want to know that you are in good hands.
