Maybe you’ve been visiting the OBGYN for years or perhaps this is your first ever visit. Either way, it’s easy to get nervous before your OBGYN appointment. Knowing what to expect can help make the whole process a little less scary and a little more comfortable.
We’ve all seen the horror scenes on television and in the movies. You show up to your physician and he/she immediately hoists your feet into stirrups and starts roughly poking around with no warning. Yikes!
Let’s get a few things straight. Your OBGYN is not there to make you feel awkward or uneasy. And they definitely aren’t trying to cause you any pain. In fact, it’s very much the opposite!
If a pelvic exam is necessary, we offer privacy for you to disrobe and put on a provided gown. You’ll also be given a sheet to protect your modesty to the greatest possible degree.
Truth time? The exam may feel slightly uncomfortable and you may feel some pressure, but your OBGYN uses precautions to ensure you won’t feel any pain. If you do, be sure to use your voice. Any pain you feel is something your OBGYN should know about!
Most OBGYNs will talk you through what they are doing as they do it, so you’ll always know what is happening. Your OBGYN is a person too, and they understand that surprises are not what you want in these moments.
Here’s the good news. Though it may feel like forever, an exam doesn’t take more than a minute or two, so you can breathe a sigh of relief because it will be over before you know it!
