Safe Medications

If you are pregnant or nursing, it's even more difficult if you have a cold or virus. If you experience symptoms, check this list first before calling your doctor.

These medications are safe to take as directed on the label and are available over the counter. If symptoms persist, contact the office at 910.323.2103 to schedule an appointment. This list is meant only as a guideline and should not be considered a replacement for medical advice directly from your doctor.

SAFE MEDICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY

Symptom

Medicine

Acne

Over-the-counter creams and astringents are okay

Allergies/Hayfever

Benadryl • Chlor-Trimeton • Tylenol Sinus (or store brand)

Cold/Flu Symptoms

Tylenol Cold/Flu/Sinus Products (or store brand)
Motrin Cold/Flu/Sinus Products (or store brand)
If using liquid Cold/Flu/Sinus products, choose liquids that are "Alcohol Free"

Constipation

Stool Softeners: Colace or Surfak •
Laxatives: Senokot, Dulcolax, or Milk of Magnesia

Cough

Robitussin Products "Alcohol Free"

Diarrhea

Kaopectate • Imodium

Dry Skin

Lotions/Creams are okay. No need to buy expensive brands.

Fever, Headache, Pain, Body Aches

Tylenol, Extra-Strength Tylenol (acetaminophen) • Motrin, Advil (ibuprofen) before 28 weeks • Aleve (naproxen) before 28 weeks

Gas

Mylicon (simethicone)

Heartburn

Tums • Mylanta • Maalox • Pepcid • Zantac or Tagamet for severe heartburn

Hemorrhoids

Tucks Pads • Preparation H • Anusol

Insomnia
(Trouble Staying or Falling Asleep)

Benadryl • Nytol • Sominex (diphenhydramine) • Tylenol PM

Minor Cuts or Scrapes

Neosporin (or store-brand antibiotic ointment)

Minor Rash/Itchy Skin

Hydrocortisone cream

Nausea and/or Vomiting

Vitamin B-6 25 mg by mouth three times a day
Dramamine

Sore/Scratchy Throat

Cepacol Lozenges • Chloraseptic Lozenges

Stuffy Nose

Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) • Saline Nasal Spray

Vaginal Yeast Infection

Monistat (or store brand) • Lotrimin • Femstat

 

DO NOT
Do not take aspirin or aspirin products. Do not use decongestant nasal sprays.

If a medication is not on this list, please call our Triage Nurse at 910.323.2103, extension 145, and leave a detailed message before taking it. She will document your call, review your chart, consult with the doctor and call you back with further instructions.

Please call the office at 910.323.2103 if your temperature rises above 101 degrees or if symptoms persist.
